Nuraghe Arrubiu
3,500 years ago a mysterious people of excellent builders lived in Sardinia and made giant stone towers called "nuraghe".
The Arrubiu Nuraghe is one of the most important and imposing ones on the island ("arrubiu" means "red", referring to the colour of the lichen covering the nuraghe). It's the only five-lobed structure of its type known to date. Its base is made of large basalt blocks upon which regular rows of smaller boulders rest. Any gaps are filled in with an abundant amount of mud mortar.
Although archaeological research is still underway today at the Arrubiu Nuraghe, it has become an important tourist centre. It boasts an up-to-date visitor and educational infrastructure that is managed year-round by a youth group (Is Janas a.r.l.). It's a rare example of how to properly exploit a local cultural asset.
