Visit to the Su Marmuri Caves and Ulassai Textile Factory
The Grotta di Su Marmuri (“The Marble Cave”) is located in the Ulassai region.
The location can be reached from Cagliari via the SS 125 (heading towards Eastern Sardinia). After the Genna' e Cresia pass, which is to the left of the SS, the road turns towards Jerzu and leads to Ulassai.
The Cave is considered one of the most impressive in Europe due to its kilometre-long length and average height of 35 meters. After first going down 200 steps, the visit then follows a comfortable path that passes by a seemingly endless series of flat areas that often contain ponds, especially along the right wall. The agglomerations on the cave surfaces are numerous and in scale with the surrounding environment. The grandeur of some of the stalagmite groups is impressive with rich flows hanging down from shelves along the walls.
After the cave excursion, you can have lunch in the nearby restaurant, famous for its local cuisine, and then continue on to the Ulassai Textile Factory.
The women of the Su Marmuri Textile Cooperative in Ulassai have dedicated themselves passionately to their work for over thirty years and are masters of traditional hand-loom techniques. Their products are all made with natural fibres and reflect the traditional decorative motifs of Sardinian handicrafts as well as new ones developed in collaboration with local artists such as Maria Lai.
Recommendations: We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothing. The average temperature inside the caves is about 10°.
